China Red is made with black tea materials sourced from Fengqing County, Yunnan, China. We only select spring and autumn harvest materials to keep the cup cleaner and help avoid harsh bitterness.
Fengqing is one of the key core regions for Dianhong (Yunnan Black Tea / Yunnan red tea). It is known for large-leaf tea material (an Assam-type tea tree line), rich in natural compounds and highly brewable—delivering better natural sweetness and aromatic intensity.
This China Red black tea is crafted as a blend of 10 tea components / material styles to build a richer, more dimensional aroma and more consistent cup performance. The profile is highly aromatic and naturally sweet, with a clean, smooth mouthfeel, virtually no bitterness, and a comfortable lingering sweetness.
We do not rely on hard-to-verify stories about “one specific tea farmer” or “one tea master.” Instead, we choose our materials through a market-based selection process. Each tea season, we go directly to the producing areas, source samples through multiple channels, and repeatedly test, screen, and taste them.

In the end, we select the version with a more intense and layered aroma, stronger natural sweetness, and a cleaner, smoother finish—so what we offer you is chosen for real performance, not just a good story.
In 1938, Mr. Feng Shaoqiu—often called the “father of Dianhong”—successfully produced early batches of Yunnan Black Tea in Fengqing, Yunnan, laying the foundation for modern Dianhong black tea. Around 2006, as Pu’er became a major trend, Dianhong felt under-recognized—so Dianhong Group set out to create a flagship, top-tier Chinese Black Tea: China Red (Zhongguo Hong).
The R&D project started in March 2007 and was finalized in October 2007. Unlike single-origin styles, China Red is a premium blended black tea: researchers evaluated 800+ cultivar materials, then repeatedly cupped and refined the formula—selecting 18 components for the most balanced aroma, sweetness, and body. Although it was trial-made in 2007, wider market recognition grew after 2010.
On March 4, 2015, during Prince William’s visit to Yunnan, China Red was presented as a diplomatic gift tea. Because of strict material selection and a complex blending process that depends on master-level control and weather conditions, authentic China Red (Dianhong Group) is produced in very small quantities (only a few hundred kilograms per year), and imitations exist. The cup is known for a vivid floral-fruity sweetness, rich layers, and a bold yet smooth Yunnan Dianhong black tea finish.
